The Cilantro on Dead Shores

Issue #1, page 2 of 4

  1. A taco buried under coriander lands on the table. IT CAME ANYWAY. THUNK
  2. Jonas picks the leaves off, one by one, into a pile. I REMOVED IT. LEAF BY LEAF. FORTY-ONE LEAVES. I COUNTED.
  3. Four diners stare at him, their teeth stained green. NOBODY ELSE WAS COUNTING.
  4. The taco is buried again. The pile beside it is gone. WHEN I LOOKED DOWN, THE PILE WAS GONE.
  5. Jonas's face in horror, a leaf reflected in his eye.
  6. The bulbs under the thatch explode one after another. FZZT
  7. By candlelight, coriander has climbed every bamboo pole. THEN THE LIGHTS WENT. THE GREEN DID NOT.
